Keelboat Programs

 

Ways to participate in the Keelboat program

SEAS Members pay $80 for an annual membership. They are then eligible for the Keelboat Crew Pass as individuals or families.

Limited options to regular members include the SEAS Regular Member Passenger Practice.

Students, upon successful completion of the Basic Sailing Course or Keelboat, are also eligible for a discount through the Student Extended Membership.

 
 

Keelboat Fees and Packages Summary

Newport 28 Practice Open Sail & Education Program*

Crew Pass / Keelboat Membership:  $245

  • Access throughout the season. Can bring 2 guests over the season when space permits.

Family/Couple Crew Pass: $400

  • Access throughout the season. Can bring 3 guests the over the season when space permits.

SEAS Regular Member Passenger Practice: $150

  • Access to 5 keelboat practice sailing sessions. No guests.

Student Extended Membership: $80

  • Access to 4 keelboat practice sailing sessions by students of any current year class sessions. No guests.

Advanced Keelboat (First Mate prep) Course: $90 (with qualifying keelboat membership)

  • We will offer 2 sections of this course this year.

  • Each course will include 18 hours on our keelboat. (time arranged by the attendees and the Skipper)

  • No guests. Limited Availability (Max 4 people per course).

  • Course is presented ON the Keelboat, once it is in the water, starting in May.

Instructor’s Course: $90

  • 2 days classroom + 4 hours of a water day/evenings.

  • Practice supervising students on the water & Safety boat operations.

  • $90 refunded upon promotion to fully qualified instructor (Must assist a full course as an Instructor Assistant).

Dockmaster/Safety Boat Operation/Maintenance Course: $90

  • One evening class and 1 water day on the safety boat.

  • You will learn how to operate the safety boat.

  • You need to have a NYS boating Safety Certificate.

  • $90 refunded upon completion of 3 board boat open sails as a Dockmaster.

Keelboat Membership

Keelboat Members are entitled to all the practice sails they can schedule.  Each take place on the 28’ sloop. 

Prerequisites: to membership:

  • Pass SEAS sailing class or equivalent experience

  • SEAS Annual membership from any National chapter

  • Additional Annual Keelboat membership fee

* Waivers required by guests who are limited to a single ride-along outing.

Guest participants are asked to consider a donation to the keelboat program to help offset costs.

"Basic Keelboat” Sailing Course

The Keelboat Basic sailing is an alternate Basic Sailing course.  Just like Basic Sailing, the Keelboat course includes one season associate membership in SEAS Westchester Sailing Club

Provides training for crew, (crewing on a larger boat).  Good for beginning sailors, or those looking for a refresher with formal terms and sailing fundamentals including:

  • Points of sail

  • Rigging and terminology

  • Tacking, jibing, man-overboard safety

  • Docking, mooring, anchoring

  • Limited to four students per water session

  • Four classroom sessions with regular students taking Basic Sailing program

  • Written test and swim test required

  • Choose any Basic Sailing calendar classroom dates

  • One full day water session on boat provides hands-on experience

  • Two practice sails on the 28’ sloop included

  • US Sailing Basic Keelboat: The National Standard for Quality Sailing Instructions book included

  • During Practice Sails, meet and sail with other keelboat members
